Beautiful Minds - Meet Kemi

Meet Kemi a painter and printmaker, living and working on the outskirts of London. Her work looks mainly at the human figure and nature.

Where do you get inspiration from?

Walking in nature, travelling to new places, seeing new landscapes always inspires me. Life and family. I use it all in the work.

What is your favourite thing about what you do?

The fact that i'm not tied down by anything, I can reinvent myself and the work, it is just a case of imagination. Being an artist has always seemed to be the only option for me and it continues to reward me. Painting is something that despite it being a full-time job, It never feels like it!

What do you love about the art & design scene in London?

The best part about London is the people and they inform the art that is made in the city, you can't help but absorb all of the different cultures and attitudes. It always challenges me to think outside of the box and go against my instincts to play it safe.

It can be competitive but I think that is what makes the art and artist good, they feel the need to hone their skills and improve.

What has been the proudest moment in your career?

My solo show that just finished at Sim Smith Gallery London. I feel like I have been working towards it in some way for the past 6 years and it felt right and easy, just the way I had hoped. I don't know what it means in the grand scheme of my career, but it felt like a great place to start.

Most treasured piece of art that you own.

My partner paints sporadically, but when he does he makes some beautiful art. There is a painting that hangs in our living room and it is really everything I like it a piece of a art! It's mysterious and always makes me want to stare at it. I love it.

Favourite place to shop art?

Everywhere and anywhere. I often find the art my friends and family make has the most sentimental value.

Destination you visit in London for inspiration?

I love going to the National Gallery, but I find most of my inspiration out in nature or in parks.
